The Way Back

Have you ever felt
like your chest was hollow,
like it was so empty that it weighed
enough to make up for what went missing?
.
Have you ever missed someone
so much that you were sure
they would emerge from the masses of people
that surrounded you in loneliness?
.
Have you ever loved a person
through dark days and bright nights,
down empty hallways
and bustling city streets?
.
Have you ever
loved a person so much
that you lost yourself
and can’t find your way back?
.

So have I.

  1. I really like the repetition of “have you ever” in this poem because it reminds me of the questions that amateur lovers ask each other when they’re still testing the waters. I absolutely adore the first stanza. Like a lot.
